Ocular Disease Management

Optovue iVue Tomographer OCT

From allergies and dry eyes to retinal disease and glaucoma, our office is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to help our doctors detect, diagnose, and treat a variety of ocular diseases.

Our Optical Coherence Tomography instrument (OCT) is used to obtain cross-section images of the retina and the optic nerve. This non-invasive scan is essential for confirming and monitoring diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy and more. It is used in conjunction with our Optomap camera, which can be used to photograph retinal abnormalities and monitor for changes over time.

A Visual Field Test may also be performed to record the sensitivity and loss of central or peripheral vision. This test is particularly useful in patients who have glaucoma (who are at risk of gradually losing peripheral vision) or macular degeneration (who are at risk of gradually losing central vision). Additionally, a visual field is an essential way to monitor visual changes related to a stroke, pituitary disease, brain tumors, and other neurological conditions.

At Look East, we are excited to be one of the few offices in the Nashville area offering a virtual visual field experience. Traditionally, a visual field testing instrument is a large bowl with a chinrest that displays random flashes of light and requires the patient to click a button every time they see one. This instrument is cumbersome, uncomfortable, and tedious.

Our Virtual Field is portable, allows for testing in a comfortable position and provides our doctors with progression analysis reports for more efficient disease treatment!

Systemic Disease Management

Did you know that the retina is the only place in the body that allows doctors to non-invasively visualize blood vessels? Or that many systemic diseases may be initially detected in the eye? This is why routine eye examinations are so essential, especially for patients who have underlying medical conditions.

For instance, patients who have a history of diabetes, hypertension, stroke, multiple sclerosis, pituitary disease and brain tumors need to be routinely monitored with advanced diagnostic testing. Additionally, certain medications, such as Plaquenil, which is commonly used to treat lupus and arthritis, requires recurrent testing of the macula with OCT imaging to monitor for any development of toxicity.

Our doctors regularly communicate with primary care physicians, endocrinologists, neurologists, rheumatologists, and more to co-manage systemic disease. These specialists rely on our eye exam findings to help guide their diagnoses and treatment strategies. Be sure to include a thorough health history at your next eye exam so that you receive proper testing and so that we can report your results to the appropriate doctor!
